Wilderness First Aid (WFA)
Matthew Smith, CCP
Critical Care Paramedic, Educator
Matthew is a critical care flight paramedic currently working for British Columbia Emergency Health Services and lives in Squamish. He works in the Whistler bike park as a pro patroller, and has spend the last several winters volunteering as member of the Blackcomb Ski Patrol. He has been a paramedic for 20 years, and has worked as a land ACP, Tactical and CBRNE medic, as well as a member of a mountain bike response unit.
Matt has lived and worked across Canada and the US from the Yukon to BC to Wyoming, and has experience as a raft guide, ski patroller, ski instructor and is a PMBI level 1 mountain bike instructor. He holds a diploma in Adult Education from St FX, and a diploma in Outdoor Education from Columbia College.
Matthew and his team at Canadian Outdoor Med are top notch educators in the field of wilderness first aid. My team of instructors and guides benefited immensely from the course content, Matthew's expertise, and all the applied simulations he ran us through.
I will be bringing Canadian Outdoor Med back every year for a refresher for my staff. What an asset to our industry to have risk management and first aid professionals who are so passionate about delivering potentially life saving education.
Any guiding or coaching operator who wants to reduce operational risk, and deliver a higher standard of care to their clients should invest in having Matthew and Canadian Outdoor Med train their staff.

I’ve taken several wilderness first aid courses and this one was by far the most engaging! Matt and crew provided a low stress, supportive learning environment. I would recommend this course to anyone recreating in the outdoors.
